By sharing your story, you have helped more people than you will ever know! Thanks!
Depression takes its toll in many ways with different people. Depression isn't always easy to notice --at first but with your experience, you can help more people by spotting that shared bond and reaching out.

Thanks for the comment, Brian! =] I agree with your views on this subject. Parents don't seem to realize the huge job they have and that it is more important in their teen years than ever.

Children learn in part through testing their boundaries and interacting with the environment. This boundary testing and environmental interaction is often dangerous to the child, or at the very least disturbing to the parents of the child. Therefore, parents have to balance the learning experience of the child with the child’s safety and developing their respect for authority, which is not a very easy task.

Teen years is also a time for developing one's identity. At this time people start thinking about who they are or what they want out of life. It is at this time that people begin to become independent of their families. Peer groups become significant in an individual's life and actually begin to exert more influence then family members. Consequently, it is very important to know the members of a teens peer group. It is particularly important because moral development is occurring during adolescence. Moral development is the formation of beliefs and values that shape the future behavior of the individual. After all prison or death is not in the best interest of a teenager.

Effective discipline is created through communication that is fair but loving, authoritative yet sensitive. It socializes a child without destroying the bond of love and trust between parent and child. Children should feel free to express their deepest feelings. However, this does not mean they can do whatever they please. Rather, the child is allowed to move freely within consistent, well-defined boundaries for acceptable behavior.

Thank you for your insight, information like this is important to me as a young parent. I'm far enough removed from adolescence to forget this stuff, but young enough to accept it and remember what it was like. Now to find part one...
