Controversy Over Modern Warfare 2 – Airport Sequence

24 November 2009

The above screenshots are from Infinity Ward’s new game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The game’s controversial level, “No Russian”, has you filling the shoes of a CIA operative working undercover for a terrorist organization. In an attempt to get to the bad guy, you must follow him through a Russian airport, and begin shooting down innocent civilians. You make your way through the airport, and out onto the runway. On the runway, you face about 40 Russian police officers, and you shoot all of them as well. Little do you know, the bad guy knows that you’re an undercover American the entire time, and just as you’re getting into the getaway vehicle — you are killed. The bad guy shot you so that the remaining police officers would find an American body on the scene. The point of the shooting was to make the Russian government think that the Americans were responsible for the airport massacre, in an attempt to get the Russians to attack the United States. Well, their plan worked now the United States is going to be invaded by Russians — all on a false premise. (Remember, this is just a game.)

Writer’s Note: I myself have played through this entire game, and I must say, that without this scene of the game, the game would make no sense at all. The game would not have been complete, and would not have made me feel as though I had to complete the game and had to get back at those people for doing that. I think this is what Infinity Ward was trying to do with the scene in the first place, and I think that they succeeded in every single way.
