The end of the year is upon us, and we can smell the sweet sent of summer beyond it. This week is the last week for our school and finals are due, but we are more concerned about getting out into the fresh air and hot summer sun.

There will be things that we miss about this school during the summer, and things that our Seniors will never get to be apart of as students ever again. People will miss their favorite classes, extra curricular activities, and the friends that will move on to colleges to further extend their education and follow the path set before them into the future.

This school year held many different obstacles for students. For instance, the freshmen got to choose their classes for the first time and may have found that one class may not have held the same interests as they may have thought before. Tests that crippled some students grades while other tests built the foundation for a solid A. There were new friendships created and old ones that fell apart. Hearts broken and hearts fixed.

We all had academic and personal struggles throughout the year that helped us learn and grow in maturity to ready us for the lives ahead. This school year brought joy and tears that will never be lost to us, but must store them in our memories for now. We are ready for a break from learning and are preparing to start the next year in our lives, whether here at Meeker High School or somewhere else in this world. Summer beckons us and we yield to its call.

With summer only days away, people are starting to make their plans for a get-away.

Deb Henderson, coach of Meeker High School girls basketball team, will be holding basketball practices as well as games throughout the summer, to keep people who have the desire to play basketball occupied.

Practice begins at 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm and starts May 23, continuing every Monday and Wednesday.

As the school year comes to a close and the summer starts up, there’s something we always seem to lose in the summer. It’s fun to be lazy, but imagine your summer to do list not as a to do list but more like a bucket list. You only get so many summers in a life time.

Sleep in but don’t sleep your summer away. What I mean is live during your summer, do things you love. Don’t just sit there. Get up, get out, go camping with your friends, go see a movie, ask that guy or girl to go on walk with you, have a party get wild (but not insane).

Summer is only 3 months long, if that; make it your goal to go and try something different every day. It only lasts a little so attack each day. Every day when you wake up say, “Today we live!!!”

There are no words to describe the taste of Apple Cinnamon Wedges. Your taste buds will be going off the wall. This is an easy snack that the whole family will love.  It only takes 15 minutes to discover heaven.

Start out with 1/4 cup of creamy peanut butter spread, then 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 4 small Granny Smith apples.

Once you have all the ingredients, you begin by mixing peanut butter and cinnamon  in a small bowl until they are blended.  Then cut the apples into wedges using and apple slicer, removing the core and not cutting the whole way through. Now hold apple wedges together loosely so you can fill middle cavity with the peanut butter mixture. Afterwards press wedges together, but be careful not to squeeze out all the filling.

Your whole family will love these cinnamon wedges that craze your taste buds.

In this April, more than 90 exchange students, from all over the world, got together in the paradise islands of Hawaii!  During April 2-9 all of us had the opportunity to experience different activities and cultures, but not only Hawaiian ones.  We, all the exchange students, were from at least 20 different countries and even if it was only for a week, we got to know each other really well and we made friends that will be never forgotten!

To start the week, on April 3rd, we had surf lessons in Waikiki beach, a Catamaran Ride and a very fun dinner at Hard Rock Café.  In the following day, April 4^th, we had a city tour around the island, where we went to the famous Dole Plantation, Haleiwa town, North Shore and Sunset Beach; where the most famous surfing competitions were held.  For the final stop of the day we visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, where we were able to experience different cultures from the Polynesian islands, like Samoa and Tonga.

On April 5^th, we had an amazing kayaking adventure were we headed to Mokulua, a bird sanctuary island made of volcanic rocks.  There we had lunch, we swam on the beautiful turquoise water and we went back to the beach Lanikai (Heavenly Waters) and after all of that we went back to the hotel.  In the next day, we spent the whole time in Hanauma Bay snorkeling, it was an awesome activity.  We saw common types of fish like the humunukuapua and all kinds of different ones.

April 7^th was my favorite day because we visited the Pearl Harbor.  First we went to the USS Missouri, the battleship, where we volunteered our time by doing a social project.  We helped them to clean, and after that we had a fantastic tour where we were able to see the command center, and a lot of cool areas of the ship.  After that we finally got to go to the memorial, where we learned a little bit more about that tragedy.  In our last day, we enjoyed our last day and we said goodbye to all the good friends we made. Hopefully I will get a chance to met them all again !

May 7, 2011 and May 15, 2011 the Meeker FFA chapter went to White River Tree Farms  owned by Gary Moyer. The chapter planted trees as a fundraiser.

Over the two days  9,900 trees were planted. Many of the FFA members showed up for work.

Included in the group was Kristen Atchely who said, “It was a long day, but had a ball, and we made a lot of progress.”

Another member that represented the FFA was Tristan Nielsen and  she commented,  “It was interesting to be able to learn how to do it (tree planting) and it was a lot of work, but a lot of fun.”

Everybody worked really hard and thank you Gary Moyer for allowing the FFA to raise funds for our future events.

This spectacular showdown shall go down in history as the most entertaining.. most extraordinarily.. most intense.. most jaw-dropping.. and the most electrifying event to ever go down in the year of 2011.

Women wake up with a good mood when they drink some fresh coffee.  Men come out of bed for eggs, bacon and sausages.

Recently done research by van Slumberdown reported that women in general have a better mood in the morning than men do.  But now we also know that we like to wake up with different scents.

Twenty-six percent of the women like to wake up with the smell of coffee. Also shower gel (32%), mowed lawn (11%) and fresh baked bread (10%) do good. Five percent of the respondents also said to wake up with the smell of their partner, but if that’s a good thing…

Not only are the seniors anxious to graduate, but so is every other student yearning for the summer and getting ready for next year.  Students prepare for finals as the teachers dread inventory.

“I’m Preparing for football next year.” says, soon to be sophomore, Kevin Eli.

Next year’s junior, Taylor Bair, says, “Prom, and I’m preparing for college.”

Lani Mataia, who is going to be a senior next year, says, ” I am preparing for awesomeness, senoritas, senior prank and college.”

Graduating senior Sawyer Bivens says, “Other than college, I prepare for making money and not getting killed.”

There you have it, from all sides, what students prepare for as the school year is coming to the end.

As a new year rapidly lurks around the corner, something will be missing. The  seniors  of 2011 have impacted the halls and the hearts of the underclassmen.  Like Mr. Henderson said, “Their leadership will be missed.”For a class of only thirty two, their presence seems much larger.

When asking Mrs. DeVore-Wedding what she would miss most about the graduating class   she smiled and replied, “Their sense of humor.” Their laughter has echoed the halls that now are filled with enthusiastic smiles.

Ms. Kim, on the other hand, said with a frown, “What I miss every year,  handing out transcripts.”

Mr. Strate lightened the mood by jokingly saying, “I will miss Ryan Wix’s flowing blonde locks, and Cole Steiner’s toothless smile.”

Ms. Burnell is going to miss their artistic abilities, and the bunch of characters and their bright smiling faces.

Mr. Kindler when asked,”What are you going to miss the most?” He replied,”Their bubbly personalities.”

Multiple seniors are very excited.  When asking one particular Cowboy if he was excited to graduate, he smiled and  replied, “Hell ya!”

Underclassmen on a scale of one to ten said ten on how much they will be missed.

We all start out as  freshmen and end the game as seniors , and this is what they have done.

The throne is now empty and will be replaced  by the juniors.

Good luck seniors in all that you do!

The last concert of the year was held last Thursday, May 12. It opened at 7:00 with the Jazz Band, consisting of  five students. They performed three songs, one of them being Luise Luise.

During the concert, Mr. Eggabraten awarded Laura Glass, the only senior in the band with two awards for her musical talent and directing when he was gone.

The Concert Band performed directly after. They performed a variety of peaces, including Semper Fidelis as there ending peace. The bright and exciting march left the audience singing.

It’s finally starting to get warm in Meeker and it’s time to break out the capris, shorts, skirts, and other summer clothes!

However; as a reminder, even though it is getting nice outside, there is still a dress code inside.

Our student dress code pertaining to summer clothes states that:

Shorts, dresses, skirts, or other similar clothing must past the middle fingertip when arms are relaxed at the side, palms flat against thighs

Inappropriately sheer, tight or low-cut clothing (e.g., midriffs, halter tops, backless clothing, tube tops, garments made of fishnet, mesh or similar material, garments that expose of uncover undergarments, muscle tops etc.) that bare or expose traditionally private parts of the body including, but not limited to, the stomach, buttocks, back and breasts are not accecptable

This is a massive update on the new student council runners. The newest runners are Anna George, Kelly Denny, Kaysen Chintala, and Joey Scherbarth.  Dakota Giao has made the decision to run for President along with Anna George and Aubrey Walsh.  Kelly Denny is running for Vice President with Lelani Mataia and Ty Shepherd. Lindzy  Patterson is running by herself for the role of secretary and so is Sydney Boes for Treasurer. New runners, Kaysen Chintala and Joey Scherbarth are joining Tala Altoafa in the fight for Parliamentarian. This sure to be a great election… Good Luck Future Student Leaders.

The Senior pranks hit Monday the 9th and along with them came trouble, p****d off underclassmen and a very overwhelmed office staff.

Before all this went down the master minds met up at a parking lot.  Then they went to the school in a huge van.  They entered the school through the auditorium and just pranked the night away.  This happened at about one o’clock that morning.  By 1:30 they were rushing out the door to safety with a grumpy Mr. Henderson too far behind to catch them.

Monday was Senior Ditch Day and this year not one Senior showed up to school to bear the reactive sting from their Sunday night/Monday early morning antics.  Most of the damage was cleaned up by the time underclassmen arrived at the school.  Textbooks  stacked in the hallway were left for underclassmen to sort through and claim.

Other pranks included: zip tying all the lockers shut, saran wrapping with fishing lines around the books, taking all the chairs and lining them down the hallway, taking the exercise plyos with pink balloons under them then wrapping saran around the concoction and carting a wheelbarrow of bricks into Mr.Henderson’s office.

“It was soo much fun. We had the biggest adrenaline rush ever” said an anonymous source. “Someone yelled cops and we all just sprinted out the door.”

All-in-all they were pranks well done and although there may be mixed reactions to the pranks, it is done. The Class of 2011 attempted their demonic worst and will soon be gone. We will miss you and hope that you have a great time in college.

For all the music lovers who where left wanting more at our last concert in December, there will be one last performance May 12th. The concert will consist of only high school students rather than having all the bands perform in one night.

The band will be performing great peaces such as Denbridge Way and Dedicatory Overture. They will perform a peace from The Planets called Mars, a loud peace that projects suspense and excitement that will make you sit on the edge of your seats.

Join the band students for a concert that will be held on Thursday, May 12th, at Meeker High School in the auditorium.

On May 10th, 2011, there will be an awards assembly recognizing the amazing students we have here at Meeker High School. Over half of the students will be presented with awards for their specific achievements that they have made during the school year.

The assembly will be held at 2:15 and will end around 3:15. The class schedule has been changed to a Wednesday schedule for the assembly.

As society moves forward, it is becoming more and more common that people put their bodies and lives at risk to look their best.  I’m talking about tanning.

Tanning is the bodies defense against the suns harmful UV rays.  When the pigment in the skin gets burnt, it darkens to help prevent further burning but this is not a good thing.  It puts your body under stress because it is rushing to repair the damaged skin cells.  This damage can also cause skin mutations that lead to cancer, not to add that tanning causes photo-aging (wrinkles and sun spots).

Many people believe that the darker your skin is, the more protection you have against sunburn and skin cancer.  This is very true but only in people with NATURALLY dark skin.  When you are light, and you become tan, it is really just your skin being destroyed.

What about tanning beds?

Tanning beds are no safer than sun exposure.  Many tanning salons claim that their tanning beds are safer because you use mainly UVA rays and the UV exposure is more controlled.  Many studies have showed that many times tanning salons exceed what is considered a safe level of UV exposure.  Study after study have shown that tanning beds increase the risks of melanoma, and non-melanoma skin cancers.

In the end there is really no safe way to tan, but there are safe alternatives to tanning, such as sunless spray tans.

MEEKER, CO– The Meeker Chamber of Commerce has partnered with local energy companies, Friends of the FFA and the Meeker FFA Chapter to give you the annual After Birth Ball! With an evening full of eating, dancing and live entertainment, you don’t want to miss this fantastic community event. This year’s ball will be at the Fairfield Center (200 Main Street) on May 21, 2011 at 6:00 P.M.

Long considered one of Meeker’s favorite and largest social events, the Afterbirth Ball signifies the end of a long cold winter; specifically the conclusion of calving and lambing season.  It also gives community members the chance to “let down their hair” and relax before the summer labor begins.  Perhaps more aptly described as the “After the Birth” ball, this event is known for a “kicking good time,” complete with dinner, dancing and great socializing.

Come at 6:00 p.m. for social hour, hosted by the Meeker Lion’s Club; during this time participants will have the opportunity to view educational displays and take a trip down memory lane as members of the Meeker FFA Chapter will have historical scrapbooks, photo albums and information about Agriculture Education on display in the lobby of the Fairfield Center.

You won’t want to pass up the FFA fundraiser dinner served from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. This scrumptious dining experience comes to you courtesy of the Friends of the FFA alumni group.  Featuring Ben Roger’s Tri-Tip, roasted pig by Todd Morris, large baked potatoes, rolls by Lori Kendall, homemade desserts courtesy of the Meeker FFA Chapter, salad and non-alcoholic beverages, this is one dinner you don’t want to miss! For only $35 per couple, $20 for individuals and $10 for kids 10 and under, you can get a great meal for an affordable price.

Get your dancing shoes out; from 8:00 – midnight, the band “Coy Keithly and the Band Straight Shot” will be performing live. Featured at the RBC Stock Growers banquet for the last two years, this country band is ready to rock the house. Make sure to stay for this FREE dance, brought to you by the Chamber of Commerce, it’s a great way to chase the winter blues away!

A Henna fundraiser sponsored by Ms. Burnell, Meeker High School art teacher, will raise money for the Meeker High School art program!

Tattoos cost $1 to $40 depending on the design detail.  If you have a special request, see Ms. Burnell during Cowboy Time to set up an appointment.

History: Henna has been used since 1200 B.C. Henna is supposed to bring luck and happiness and is used in joyous ceremonies in India and other cultures.

Care for Henna tattoo:

1. Scrub area to remove lotion and layers of dead skin BEFORE application of henna .
2. Avoid wetting design area for 12 hours if possible.
3. Let the Henna paste dry and leave it on for six or more hours for best results.
4. Peel off the dry henna paste with your fingers and rub off any residue with any vegetable oil.

You must have parental permission to get a temporary Henna tattoo.

Even though you can’t always tell when you look outside, spring really is coming up. Which means it’s time for the new spring fashion trends. I’ve done some research and can proudly present the new trends for spring 2011 right off the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris.

The main styles spotted on the runway are the ballerina, military, color blocking and the neutrals and nudes.

The “Ballerina” and the “neutrals and nudes” looks are a little similar.  For both styles we see a lot of neutral colors like creamy white, tan and pale pink.  What makes the ballerina look different is the choice of fabric. We see a lot of  soft and delicate fabrics like lace, silk, and soft cotton. The pieces for the ballerina look have a very feminine touch with little bows and ruffles.

“Many mass retailers like Tommy Hilfiger and Forever 21 have loads of great ruffled shirts this spring,” style and beauty expert Mary Allice Stephenson says. “Whether it’s a ruffle chambray tank or the ruffles on your tiered skirt, a little ruffle goes a long way and sweetens up everything you wear. I pair spring’s ruffles right now under my most masculine suits and boyfriend cardies. It makes even the most casual clothes in my closet seem super sexy.”

The military trend is back and making its mark this season. This trend has been hanging around for quite a while and is bigger than ever this summer and could not be easier to pull together. In its simplest form the army look is all about combining khaki with a range of colors including bold red and accents with gold, silver or brass. The must have for this look is the military jacket in a petrol blue or khaki. If you’re inspired by this look, you’ll find some great items at Forever 21 or G Star Raw.

The color blocking look will be characterized by lots of bright colors, that are badly needed after a long, cold, dark winter filled with gray tones. When it comes to color blocking, don’t be afraid to mix unconventional colors together. Blue and green and orange may sound like a crazy combo, but it will give you the perfect look.  You can shop this look basically everywhere, but some great essentials you’ll find at H&M and asos.com

The Neutrals and Nudes look is very feminine and gracefull.  This look is been around for a while now in Europe but finally spotted in the USA. It isn’t just in clothing we see a lot of nude colors as far as the fashion world goes. We’ll also see nude colors in our make up, jewelry and even shoes. What makes this look different from the ballerina look is the choice of fabrics. This look works great with leather, suede and jeans. You’ll find some great spring makeup with lots of neutral colors at Stilla.  7forallmankind and American Eagle will give you a great selection of clothes.

Now all you we have to do is wait for spring to finally begin. You’ll sure look great with these fashion trends.
