Fish Pedicures Can Transmit Diseases

The fish that are used by some salons to dead skin from your feet can transmit diseases.
Experts warn for this new trend in beauty treatments, according to the Dutch Elle. This treatment is already banned in fourteen states, including Colorado.
According to the experts infections can be transmitted this way. The fish eat the dead skin and skin flakes from people’s hands and feet, but when the next customer has a little wound and the fish eats the skin away, this can possibly transmit the infection or disease.
Pedicures report to check carefully for skin infections.

Extasis Tango Quartet

Pity the poor person who has only heard the rhythm of a tango through their ipod. There is nothing quite like being transported straight to the streets of Buenos Aires through the golden strings of Extasis Tango Quartet. Tango lovers often go as far as Argentina to feel the melodic spirit of this latin dance, but on January 26, the sensual music of the  tango came to Steamboat live.

While a  serious quartet on stage, their  interview was commical off  stage, and just as entertaining  as their previous performance.

Claude Simons,   a  professional  violinst , is also  a member of the Colorado Symphony as well  as  Susan Cahill on bass.

Other Extasis members,  include evan orman on his bandoneon  and Mike Tilley on piano.

The lights are focused on the quartet, so bright that they are vividly lit for the audience, but too bright for them to see the audience they play for.  Tango is not their only music love, they also play classical music.

Their original bass player died and Susan Cahill began to play for them.

They all began playing their instruments when they were younger. Claude plays various instruments including piano and violin.  Mike Sims travels around with different singers and performers.  While the players miss being away from home, they like being on the road (no house chores they teased).

Their favorite part about playing is the physical sensation of music rythm, tone, and the emotions it builds upon.

Their worst performance was on Mexican TV when the speakers and amps went bad.  It was embarrassing because no one clapped.

Not watching  this performance on YouTube (although you can find it there) but in person was invigorating.

Check out Extasis on their new CD.

Letter to the Editors

Feb. 23, 2011

To the editors:

In the beginning, the Roundup was very interesting with articles that concerned the high school population and the public. There were personal interest articles, sports articles and different activities were covered. I could read the enthusiasm in the reporter’s words.

However, as of late, the quality of the articles has diminished. The vigor is no longer there and there is nothing new reported. I see potential for news warticles everyday but they are never in the Roundup. I, for one, would like to see the editors and reporters get out there and make something happen.

You have the possibility of making a big difference in our school. Do it!!

Sincerely,

Mary O. Washburn

On February 11, the place was packed with people from all around town! They had people going outside to cool off because it was getting so warm inside. They had free pizza and brownies for the people that had shown up. People played poker and the wii.

So, if your bored on a Friday night, check out the Underground, a place where youth can hang out and play games with each other without worrying about getting into trouble.

How Can Concussions Effect the Brain?

8 February 2011

A concussion is an injury to the brain.  It is often caused by a blow to the head or body that causes the brain to shake inside the skull and prevents the brain from working correctly for a short amount of time.

Symptoms include passing out, headache, and light headedness, slurred speech, not remembering anything before the accident, bad coordination, throwing up, change in sleep patterns, lack of interest, change in sex drive and change in personality.  When the blow is too drastic, or a concussion is repeated over and over it can cause problems with movement, learning or speaking.  There is a very small chance of permanent damage but it is still important to see a doctor.

In many studies it is being found that concussions are more dangerous than we thought.  One hockey player said he did nothing all summer because of the splitting headaches that made him sensitive to light and music.

Scientist have found that many years after football players stop playing ball their brains start into a degenerative process that kill brain cells.  Eight out of Eight football players studied have a type of brain problem do to concussions.

In the old days, a concussion seemed like a minor set back, but with today’s technology we are able to see the truth.  Congress has passed bills that make schools make parents sign papers that say they understand the risks of head injuries in sports.

Doctors are also taking better care of head trauma patients and giving them more time off from sports.  In reality concussions are a bigger deal than everyone makes it.

Elementary School Frozen

Yesterday, the Meeker Recreation Center and Meeker Elementary Schools heaters shut down. They are both run by the same system.

The elementary school is a new building that was finished just before the start of school in August. Everything in that building is new. But because the heaters are run by the same system, it all quit working at once. For the rest of the day, the students and staff all froze.

Today, the elementary schoolers have no school. Most of them are very joyous for the day off, as are teachers, lunch ladies, and custodians. The Rec. Center will also be closed down untill the situation is fixed. They are expecting that the heaters will be fixed by noon today.

The Future of the Meeker Cowboys Is Bright

The cowboys have been doing good lately, striking out many of their opponents and rivals. Coach Klark Kindler has been working boys harder then ever, and it is starting to show. The cowboys are 7-4 , and they are still in the running for district champions. Before the basketball season began, reporter Kevin Eli interviewed Coach Kindler and asked him if he expected to win the championship, and his answer was, “we’re always expecting to win.” The team has high hopes of getting into state this year. Trey Morris, a varsity player and a junior at MHS, said that “last year’s team had more talent, but this year’s group has more heart.” The team is willing to work harder and harder as the season gets tougher with each game, so buckle up your seatbelts and expect the unexpected ’cause this is going to be a long ride.

Trip To The Herald Times

On Thursday, the 27 of January, the Journalism class boarded a bus to the Rio Blanco County’s news paper office known as the Herald Times. They learned about the history of the paper and what they do now to get the news out weekly.

Whey the paper first started, it was only the Meeker paper and was known as the Meeker Herald. It later joined the Rangely Times and became the Rio Blanco Herald Times. The paper is the second oldest paper in Colorado.

Every week, they take articles written by the journalists and from regular people to be edited and put in the paper. They send the articles to Rifle to be printed and then they travel back to Meeker to be given out on Thursday. People from around the area pay to put their ads in the paper. Each ad takes from 10 to 15 minutes each to create. They change the font and picture to make it pop out at the readers. They are then placed into the paper.

Articles are proof read and edited by more than one person. This helps keep mistakes out. A key point that our journalists learned is that you should always be able to back your article up with hard facts and if it comes in late, it is not published. That means no pay check that week. There is no old news in the Herald Times.

They have learned that it is easier to write about something that you are passionate about. If you are writing about sports but are not passionate about it, then it may be easier to write about upcoming concerts that your school will be having. To write about something that interests you helps get the article to flow, rather than ramble or stagger.

They returned in time to go to the next class, but are taking what they have learned and are using it to their advantage with their daily paper.

Words

2 February 2011

Co-written with Jose Villapondo.

Indeed words are the most powerful weapon.

Words are taken for granted. They are used in everyday life, weave us together and originate  from other languages.  The roots of  words are the golden fibers extending meaning and understanding.

How are they used either negatively or positively?

Different cultures use slang terms to chide and deride. All races have a way to look down at each other. It is acceptable in some races to refer to one another  with these slang terms, but if another race were to call them the same thing,  they are considered “in the wrong” and held accountable.

Here at Meeker High School you can hear on a side of the hallways rude comments and offensive terms, and on the other side of the hallways its filled  with acclaim .

Meeker is a small town full of words, words which quickly fade in to gossip.  People’s lives are  changed and their views made into someone elses . Words are  used to compliment one another or to degrade one another. We sing, shout, and yell words which shadow or reveal the feelings that one withholds.

Words are truly worth a thousand meanings.

Studies show the brain is more sensitive and responsive to the negitive more  than the positive. Thats why the negative words one says follows  someone longer and stick  in their head.

Other research show there are more negative ways  to express  emotions  or fillings than positive. The brain needs a higher input of positivity and a lower amount of negativity.

You know what they say:  ”Treat others the way you want to be treated”.

Vegetarians!

1 February 2011
Comments Off

It’s so hard to be a vegetarian, especially in the town of Meeker. In a ranching driven town, vegetarians are “frowned upon.”  A debate between someone who loves meat against someone that thinks it’s horrible could go on for hours and hours and still never be resolved.

What many people don’t realize is that being a vegetarian can be really good for you, if you do it right. You cannot just simply cut meat out of your diet all together. You will end up lacking protein and vitamins that are essential. If you do chose to be a vegetarian, and you do it correctly, there are many health benefits.

Vegetarians tend to have lower blood pressure, lower levels of cholesterol, and a much lower chance of heart disease. Vegetarians also have a lower risk of getting diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other dementia disorders. They are also at a very low risk of getting an Animal-to-Human Transmitted disease, such as salmonella, mad cow and HTLV-1, which is the first retrovirus found to cause cancer.

It’s very simple. For example, one person only needs to eat two tablespoons of peanut butter to get the recommend amount of protein a day, which most people get from meat. The other vitamins and minerals that you aren’t getting in meat are easy to find in every day food, prepared the right way.

There are three main types of vegetarianism.

Ovo – includes dairy products, but not eggs.

Lacto – includes eggs, but not dairy products

Ovo-Lacto – includes both dairy products and eggs.

There are also such things as Vegans as well. A vegan is a vegetarian who does not eat any dairy products whatsoever. They also do not wear or buy anything that was made from animals or possibly tested on animals.

Cutting back on meat can not only help you and your body, but it can also save lots of innocent animals that have feelings too!

Cowboys vs Wildcats

1 February 2011

North Park and the Meeker Cowboys was more of games of memories. The game was a walk in the park for our Meeker Cowboys as they stomped all over the Wild Cats. The first half actually didn’t go so well as the game was a close one. Coach Kindler wasn’t happy through the first half as he knew we could have done better. At half time our boys knew we didn’t do the job we were supposed to do and that’s what killed us. The Cowboys went into the next half thinking about their job and succeeding  as they raised the points by a lot. Towards the ending, Coach Clark Kindler put our substitutions in and they did their job and kept the score high. In the end of the game the score was 57-28 as the Cowboys protected their house and took the gold. Next week the Cowboys will be taking the charge right back at North Park to stomp them once more. So come out and see us do it one more time.

The 4A school, Steamboat Springs came to Meeker, Tuesday on January 25, 2011. The girls varsity played Steamboats JV and Meeker’s girls Jv played their C team. During the Meeker varsity, the score was 48-45, Meeker. Starting off the game it was a pound for pound half as both teams went back and forth making shots at both ends each time. By the third quarter Meeker pulled ahead by ten points, but soon after, Steamboat began to fight back.  In the last quarter Steamboat caught back up and once again Meeker and Steamboat were neck and neck for the win. In the last few seconds Meeker made a three and the game was over. Meeker won.
