In With The New; Out With The Old

15 December 2010

The memories cling with the building itself. Voices still echo in the hall and it had played a role in some of our lives. The old elementary isn’t used at this moment, but it will soon be turned over to the town of Meeker. Interviewing a student at  Meeker Elementary, I asked “Do you like the new or the old elementary?” One student answered old, while another answered new. This school was needed. The older building had various health hazards and lacked needed space.  The historic building may serve as a community college or be used for festivals, chamber of commerce meetings and shows. It might also be used as rental space. Built  in the 1920’s, this was your ideal school. Now it is  a historical building along with its memories.  New or old, it has structerd a part of Meeker.

A New Way to Play

15 December 2010

For a few years, the Meeker High School Pep Band has been playing at basketball games with the drum set on the ground. This year there will be a change.

The  Mechanical Career Cluster students participated in building a platform that will be mounted at the top of the bleachers. It is made to support the weight and size of the drums. It has edges that will keep it from falling off in the middle of a game or when playing.

The band is particularly happy to have the drums elevated. It helps put better sound out to the gym and helps them keep time with the drums behind them rather than in front.

It is also a less chance of the drums sliding around like they do when they are set on the rug on the floor.

An issue with this new platform is setting up the drums. Will it be a problem to get up the stairs with them and set them up in time? Not as bad as setting them up outside during football games. The drums are set on a similar platform during football games that is moved from inside the stands and set up first. The new one will be nailed to the bleachers and will not be moved after it is set up.

Eating Disorders; A Symptom of Your Past

15 December 2010

Do you know someone with an eating disorder and don’t know how to approach it?  Eating disorders are widespread and destructive. Most people don’t realize how serious and hard these disorders are to overcome. These disorders can take place from a memory in that persons past. Most of the time the memory is so far down into their soul that they can’t remember it, and they don’t realize that it ever happened, therefore they deny it ever happened until they do realize it’s true. From that point on their journey begins on the road to healing. An eating disorder is just one of the many ways they chose  to resolve this memory. It may have happened when they were 5 or 6 years old and don’t remember it, but their heart does and what they are seeing is how their trying to appeal with this issue. For people who literally look into the mirror and see someone who isn’t them are not likely to believe people who tell them they are not fat or that they are perfect. For some people it just brings them down because they know that it isn’t true from what they see in their own eyes, you can’t explain it to someone who sees it themselves. Bulimia is a serious disorder along with Anorexia.

There are two main types of eating disorders:

  1. Bulimia
  2. Anorexia

People with Anorexia  refuse to maintain a healthy weight and people with Bulimia binge and purge. Binging is when a person eats excessively, up to 1,000-3,000 calories. Purging is what a person does after they eat, they make themselves throw up and often times they do that by bothering the uvula or taking large amounts of  laxatives. It is estimated that 1/3 of people struggling with bulimia use laxatives, and roughly 10% take diuretics

Eating disorders have reached epidemic levels in America as 7,000,000 to 10,000,000 women and around 1,000,000 men have a disorder with eating. Some Physical and Psychological effects of Bulimia are:

Physical

  • Esophageal problems
  • Vocal chord damage
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hair loss
  • Digestive problems
  • Decreased body temperature
  • Irregular heart beat
  • Dental damage
  • Organ damage
  • Dry skin
  • Decreased bone density
  • Hormone irregularities
  • Week muscles
  • Immune system damage

Psychological

  • Out of control feelings
  • Mood changes
  • Avoidance of others
  • Constantly thinking about food
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Unable to eat with others
  • Poor body-image

Other bulimia side effects include difficulty conceiving a child, a larger risk of miscarriage and premature birth after conception.Bulimia side effects damage a women’s body which can physically inhibit her from having healthy children in the future.

“Nature requires humans to be healthy themselves in order to continue to propagate a species that is capable of surviving.”- Theory of Natural Selection.

A few weeks ago I asked a man what basketball was.

He looked at me and said,  ”Are you serious!”

So the man, frustrated, grabbed a dictionary and pointed out the word basketball and read it out loud.

This is what  the dictionary said:

Bas-ket-ball / ‘==,=/ n, often attib 1: a game played with a ball between 2 teams of 5 players, each team attempting to throw the ball through its own basket and to prevent the other team from scoring, the winner being the team that scores the most points.

Thats when I stopped him and said “NO!..thats when your wrong my friend.”The real definition for basketball is”

Bas-ket-ball / ‘==,=/ n, often attib 1: BASKETBALL, A SPORT THAT IS DOMINATED BY 5 “MEN” KNOWN AS THE COWBOYS AND THE COWBOYS CONSTANTLY THROWING THE BALL IN THE OTHER TEAMS NET AS THE OTHER TEAM STRUGGLES TO KEEP UP. THE TEAM WITH THE MOST POINTS OF COURSE WOULD BE THE COWBOYS, WINS..READ IT AND WEEP..TELL WHO EVER WROTE THE DICTIONARY TO GET HIS FACTS STRAIGHT,  BECAUSE THE COWBOYS ARE BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!”

Jingle Bells! Jingle Bells! December is upon us, and we are all in the mood for some Christmas music. Well the waiting will soon be over. The Barone Middle School and Meeker High School bands will be  performing on December 16th at 7:00pm. That will be on a Thursday night in the Meeker High School Auditorium.

They will be performing several well known pieces including Silent Night, by our very own Mr. Eggabraten, a jazzy arrangement of Jingle Bells called Swing Those Bells, and more.

The students that will be performing have worked hard everyday, the high school students first thing in the morning, and would appreciate the support for going out in front of a crowd of people to play music for their entertainment.

So if you’ve been “dying” for some Christmas music, here is your chance to see it live. Don’t miss it!

Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys

On November 22nd, 2010, My Chemical Romance released their new approach to making music. Taking a huge step from hard rock with intense and violent lyrics to new wave techno and surprisingly upbeat dance beats. This album is called Danger Days:The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Lead singer and songwriter, Gerard Way, said “The hardest thing for us to admit is that we just wanted to be ourselves and have fun with our music. We were trying too hard to be America’s rock band. We’re doing what we want now.”

Although not all members of My Chemical Romance agreed with this change, not only in music, but in style. The band’s second drummer, Bob Bryar, quit during the recording process of the new record. The band’s official website said that he quit over “creative differences”, when other sources have said that Bob quit simply because he wouldn’t support changing everything that they once stood for.

It is expected for some change from their last record because of the guy’s personal lives and how much they have changed.

In the beginning of 2010, Gerard was diagnosed with cancer in his throat and many doctors told him that he would never sing again. The cancer was removed before it spread and the Chemotherapy killed what was left of it.

He ignored doctors and is now singing his heart out every single night on tour. He has to ice his throat every few songs and he family and friends agree that he’s pushing it. Gerard said “This is all I want to do and I can’t let my fans down. They come to the show and expect an amazing show.  If I lose my voice, at least I’ll go out fighting”

Two members of the band recently had children and all members of the band are married now. Mikey Way, the bassist and Gerard’s younger brother, recently had a still born child.  How can you expect normal music or behavior from people whose lives are no longer normal? With all of this going on, they’ve still managed to make a record!

Check out My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days and catch them on their World Contamination Tour from December 2010 until May of 2011!

A Teenager’s Guide To Parenting

10 December 2010

Some of you may remember the “good old days”, when people helped one another just because that’s how they were raised. That’s not the case, anymore. If you want any sort of assistance or help at all, you better have enough money or enough connections because if you don’t, there is no help. Some might ask, why is that? Well, that’s one hell of a good question. However, I believe that there are many reasons people aren’t as generous or helpful as they once were, the first one being morals.

Kids aren’t raised the way they should be; you say the word “spanking”, and a puzzled look comes across their face. All throughout their life they see others getting away with wrongdoing, and they decide to try it out. Once they get away with it, it slowly progresses throughout their elementary years, and once they get to high school it reaches it’s peak. They are doing drugs, getting drunk, getting pregnant (or getting someone pregnant), and they don’t face any consequences for their actions. Then, they get out of high school and move on to the real world, and realize that they have made a huge mistake, and that they have possibly screwed their entire life up. Then, when they go to get help from someone, no one cares if they need help or not because they’re screw-ups, and I couldn’t agree more.

Now, that being said, let’s move to the opposite end of the spectrum, where the problem still boils down to how they were raised. They grow up seeing their father, the surgeon, making tons of money, and coming down on them hard to do well in school. Some do, and some take the path that I mentioned before. The ones that do take their schooling seriously, seem to lose all of their sympathy for the poor, underprivileged and mistreated. They want to charge the hell out of the elderly and unfortunate, but in turn want to drive around Porsches and Ferraris. Now, as for the type of people we talked about before, who have messed their life up because of bad decision making, I can’t blame the doctors and medical employees charging a lot of money, or making them wait a little longer for healthcare. However, it seems that the doctors and healthcare professionals don’t make them wait because of who they actually are or what they’ve done, but because of their social status.

I believe that this is a prime example of bad parenting. People who are brought up thinking that they’re better than everyone else, tend to stay that way for the rest of their life. For the most part, that remains true with people who are brought up thinking that they’re worthless. However, there are those select few that are changed forever because they realize that they are not worthless. They stop caring what everyone else says or thinks about them, and just try as hard as they can to be a good person. Those are the ones who truly care about the well being of others, and that’s the sad part. The people who are brought up having piles of money, and have the potential to truly help people, don’t. They become pathetic excuses for human beings, who are self-centered and stuck-up. Whilst the people who have nothing tend to be the most genuine people you’ll ever meet. Now, you may be thinking “has he forgotten about all the celebrities who donate thousands of dollars every year to charity”, so let’s talk about those people.

Do you think that every celebrity who’s ever donated money did it because they cared about who they were helping, or do you think it was because they cared about how everyone else looked at them? I’m not saying that every person with money is anally challenged, because they’re not, but generally speaking, a lot of them are. There are some celebrities that center their careers around helping others, whether it starts that way or not. Those are the ones who really make a difference in peoples’ lives, because not only do they give their money, they give their time, and most of all, their love.

So, I’m done with my little rant, but I would appreciate it if people would raise their kids to be respectful, caring human beings, instead of pathetic (whether they be on the stuck-up end or no-good end) slobs. Raise good people who are going to better the world for all the rest of us.

STUCO: Update

“I call to this meeting to begin, at 8:05″ said Charley Adams.

Conflict was in the air as STUCO meeting began on Tuesday, December 7, 2010.  As the secretary, Amanda Kendal, went through role,  some of the members were anxious to get the meeting started.

As the discussion began, the usual active members began to talk while others just zoned out. When the topic about buying the “school spirit” items came up it struck a nerve within the STUCO sponsors, Mrs. Kelley and Mr. Snell.

The Cowboy Shootout committee had purchased pom poms, cow bells, foam fingers, etc. to raise school spirit for around $285.  Most of these items purchased, according to CHSAA rules, are not allowed to be used.

Mrs. Kelley expressed her disappointment in the lack of knowledge of these rules in which the items were not allowed.  She went on to say that $285 dollars is a lot of money for the economy in which we are in, and wanted a resolution as to how we would get the money back.

The Cowboy Shootout committee came up with ideas and the problem is still under discussion.

Understanding Self-Harm or Cutting Behavior

7 December 2010
Comments Off

There is a lot of misunderstanding in our society about why adolescents and adults engage in self-injury or ‘cutting’ behavior. One of the most harmful things one can do to someone who self-injures (or cuts) is to judge them for their behavior.

One of the most important things one can do as a friend and/or family member is to really take time to listen to the person. People who self-injure do so because the pain gets to be too much. This is one way they have to let this pain ‘out.’

If they have shared with you that they cut, it is often times because they trust you. They don’t want to be scorned, yelled at or judged – they just want someone to really listen and care about what they are going through that is causing them so much pain. They want to feel accepted and trust someone with their feelings.

Individuals who cut have also shared that they have feelings of abandonment, isolation and/or are frequently misunderstood. Self-harmers need another human being who will be there to relate to them in an unconditional way.

They need hope and love.

Results District FFA Creed Contest

Hello everyone!

I just received a phone call from Quentin; and have the results from the 2010 Colorado River Valley District FFA Creed Speaking Contest.

Stephany Joos is the District Creed Speaking Champion; Torrie Gerloff placed 3rd!

These girls had to compete against the Chapter Creed speaking winners from 6 other schools (14 speakers total) – only one student is allowed the opportunity to represent these schools (our district) at the State Creed Speaking Contest, which will be held in Alamosa this next year!

For the second year in a row, a member of the Meeker FFA Chapter will be given that opportunity! I am so very proud of our students! Memorizing, presenting (on a stage in front of a large crowd), and answering questions about the 5 paragraph FFA Creed is quite an accomplishment – especially when you realize that we ask our youngest students in the school (Freshmen) to do it! I wanted to let you all know about our student’s successes today! Both girls worked extremely hard and deserve a pat on the back. :-)

The Highest Level of Disrespect

3 December 2010

Soldiers are shipped away for years on end, risking their lives on war fronts and behind the scenes so that we have the liberty to live our day to day lives as we please.

These soldiers are people who left their families, jobs, and entire lives at home. For many of them, their motivation is to think about sleeping in their own beds, hugging the ones they love, and being able to go to a job where they aren’t in danger every day. When they finally arrive “home”, they find this isn’t the American they left behind.

Thousands of soldiers are finding that their jobs, homes, and expectations of America, gone. According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 76 percent of all homeless, are veterans. They estimate that there are around 107,000 homeless veterans  on any given night. While the government is working so hard to make sure the poor have homes and jobs, our soldiers are sleeping on the streets. What a way to repay someone who risked their lives for you.

There are homeless shelters across America that are for veterans only. These shelters not only provide food and beds for veterans, but treatment, if needed. Many of them have a psychiatric wing that helps deal with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and other problems that incoming soldiers might have as a result of being on a war front.

Of course it’s great that these veterans have a place to go, but would you want to come home to be taken care of by a shelter? It is the highest level of disrespect to take homes, jobs, and most of all, hope from the brave people who went through Hell for our country.

C’mon America. We can do much better.

The Dying Game

2 December 2010

“Come on, try it…I dare you.” This was a quote from an episode of Criminal Minds  (Risky Business)  about a dangerous game called the “Choking Game.”  The FBI team discovers the quote on a website that was used to convince teens to play that game. “It’s the ‘good’ kids high,” says one of the FBI agents. Many good kids may see this game as a innocent, harmless way to fit in.

In reality this game is not at all harmless.

When Sarah Pacatte was young, she was enticed into playing the game by kids from a different town. This game was called the Hyperventilation Game. She only did it once, unimpressed with the high it was supposed to give.   She thought it was an unimportant part of her past.

Until it killed her son.

Gabriel Harry Mordecai was a twin.  He was a very caring, active young man who loved every thing about his life and he was Sarah Pacatte’s son.

Gabriel had a older brother and a twin brother. He loved the outdoors and snakes. He was a honor student who wanted to go to college, then head to the Marines Special Forces.  His idea of  bliss was someday to retire and care for snakes.

That all changed when Gabriel began playing this game.

One day Sarah overheard her twin sons talking about the game. She told them to stop;  it could kill them– thinking she was exaggerating– not knowing the game actually could.

A while later, while fishing with their older brother, Gabriel found a rope and started to chase Samuel around. He told him to stop and tried to convince him to throw the rope away.

Gabriel snuck the rope home.

Once inside his bedroom, he tied the grimy cord to his top bunk and wrapped it around his neck. He didn’t tie it–just loosely looped it.  His brother discovered him and called frantically for his mother.  Sarah rushed in and when she slipped her fingers underneath the rope, it fell away.  The slight pressure had been deadly.

When he was found his twin, Samuel called 911 while his mom tried to do CPR.  The following is a transcript of the 911 call:

“Hi, I have an emergency,” said Samuel overwhelmed in tears.

“Ok, what is your emergency?” the 911 lady  said trying to keep calm.

“My little brother might be dead.”

“Your husband might be dead?” she said not understanding.

“No, my brother.”

“Your brother. Ok, is he there with you?”

“Uh, Uh, yeah.”

“Ok.”

“But we think he might be dead. I don’t know.”

“Ok, hold on a second. How old are you? How old are you?”

“Thirteen.”

“Ok, where is your brother at? Where is your brother at?” again repeating herself to try and get Samuel to understand.

“He’s in our room.”

“He’s in your room. Is he breathing? Are you there by yourself?”

“No, I’m with my mother.”

“Ok, I want you to stay on the line with me.”

“Ok, ok, I need you to get an ambulance right away.”

“Ok, why do you think he’s dead?”

“Because there’s a rope around his neck tied to a bunk bed and he’s all purple and stuff.”

“Ok, how old is your brother?”

“Thirteen, we’re twins.”

“Ok, you’re twins and he’s thirteen too?”

He died 18 days after he was taken to the hospital. He was just 13 years old.

In another part of the country, Kevin Tork was playing the same game. His parents described him as a boy that would do anything for anyone.

When walking his sister home, a truck drove past them and yelled something at them. The truck drove up a hill and turned around. The passenger had a knife, Kevin pulled his sister behind him and the car drove off.

Another time, Kevin and his family were having lunch downtown, a lady came to Kevin’s dad asking for money. He said that he would not give her money but offered his meal. Kevin pulled out a ten dollar bill that he earned mowing lawns and gave it to the lady. Though his parents said she would probably use it to buy drugs, Kevin believed that it would help her.

Monday, March 30, 2009.

Kevin took a belt for the bathrobe that he had gotten from his dad. He tied it around his neck. When his sister walked in to the room the Choking Game had taken affect. His heart was still beating, but he died on the way to the hospital. He was just 15 years old.

Both of parents have had to fight through a horrible tragedy.

“I think of him every minute, of every hour, of every day,” says Ken Tork.

Sarah Pacatte says the same of her son Gabriel.”I think of him all the time, he is still my boy,”

They both prayed heavenly and looked to God for help. Something they didn’t do, is crawl in a corner and give up. They have done everything they can to tell the horrors of this game.

Have you played the game?

Denee Chintala: Ordinary or Extraordinary?

“She is a good role model. I mean in volleyball she was so supportive,” said freshmen, Taryn Kohls.

Denee Chintala is one of our beloved Seniors here at Meeker High School. She is in, what she would call, “the best year ever!” She is a 17 year old with a lot to offer.

Next year she will be attending the University of Wyoming (UW) in Laramie, Wyoming and studying Agriculture Education. Which makes sense, because her passion is Future Farmers of America (FFA).

She loves to spend time with her family and friends and will miss them when she leaves for college. Her goal is to befriend everyone and doesn’t hold grudges. She says that everyday, she gives people chances to become friends with her again if they weren’t the day before.

When asked what would she like people to know, she replied, “My favorite ice cream is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.”

Teenage boys take more risks, but why

2 December 2010

Any parent of a teenage boys understands the risk taking nature of their child.  Insurance companies have even raised their rates for boys.

But what makes them risk thier bodys, and lives.  Is it the over-flow of totosterone, the need to be accepted by other men, or the want to be loved by beautiful, ravishing young women?

William Farthing of the University of Maine in Orono surveyed 48 young men and 52 young women and found out that girls actually prefer more cautious boys over the risk-taking stud.  But it has been shown that risk-taking men are more likely to gain acceptance from other males, and women love men with high social status.

It seems that the reason boys take these risks are because of girls, and because of the raging hormones that give them the NEED to impress females.

University of Ghent, Belgium did a study showing the link of testosterone to risk taking.  When playing a financial game, the men with higher testosterone were more likely to risk more money.  The boys with high levels of testosterone were also shown to have more friends who also take part in risky behavior.

“We need to talk about attendance!” said Denee Chinatala.

With all the heck tech from last weeks meeting STUCO members got their act together. There was a two hundred percent increase of attendance but none the less, the STUCO members still had a lot to say about it.

The meeting went off with a kick as the President, Charley Adams, did his duties. STUCO discussed what they talked about last week and what is to come soon, as always.

In other news,  STUCO decorated the lobby to celebrate all the holiday spirit.  Also, they will be selling candy grams. If you don’t know what a candy gram is, it is a candy cane that you can buy for your friends and write a note that will be sent to them during class. So be sure to spread your holiday cheer and buy your grams.

What the Fruit Cake!!!

The beloved, the hated, the delicious, the sweet, the nasty the fruit cake. Where did this delicious, yet disgusting treat come from. The history of the fruit cake is mostly unknown yet here’s what we do know.

The oldest reference to the holiday treat goes as far back as the Romans. There recipe had pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, honey, spices and  raisins that were mixed into barley mash. The sugar preserved fruits weren’t added until medieval times.

Originally the treat was used for all events such as weddings, funerals, birthdays and holidays. Another reason for the cake was it was seen as a good luck charm for the nut harvests. During the harvests  lasts years fruit cakes that were made would be eaten while at the end of this fruit harvest they would make fruitcakes to be saved for next year.

Now why it became part of the holiday tradition. There are many theories; One says it was so popular because british peaple handed it out to poor women singing Christmas carols, others say it was because it originated in the holy land, but why it became part of the tadition no one really knows.

The mystery shall remain with the fruit cake.

Has 2+2=4 caused chaos amongst the students of Meeker High?

As students may say, this equation is common sense, but do they think of it as a mathematical equation or are they really thinking deep about this. Many students have brought some strong arguments towards this statement.

“Its an interesting topic and you really have to think about the obvious.” says freshman Ariah Adams.

“It encourages students to think more deeply about this statement. There is more to think about in likes of literary boundaries than mathematical thoughts,” states Emilee Kohls.

This equation has brought some arguments to the halls of Meeker High School.

“This equation is just common sense!” says Alyssa Davis.

As this equation has involved many arguments in the classroom of Kathleen Kelley the Language arts teacher, she is struggling to find what shes looking for. Mrs. Kelley has overcome many statements to this equation. How this started? Charley Adams came up with the idea for the prompt.
