Server Blockades From a Student’s Eyes

15 December 2009 — Benjamin Gerloff

Upon the beginning of the new school year, students were appalled by the immense security network that blocked everything from internet games to educational sites. The blockages were originally intended to keep students out of sexually fueled sites, ban streaming video, and prevent students from accessing websites that are unsuitable for a school environment.

Are these features taking it too far? Most students interviewed agree. Certain topics cannot even be searched, such as STD information, alcohol and drug facts, downloads, and other such things; students have to commonly work twice as hard to get around blocked sites when committing to a project.

“They’re too much.” Evan Jordan stated while researching a project in the lab.

Although these blocks cost valuable class time and make projects nearly impossible, many people feel it necessary due to the abuse from some people of school privileges.

  1. They are certainly going too far. And they’ll go 1984 on you if you find a way around it :)

The whole thing makes me mad.

  2. Pop and internet restrictions. If I didn’t know any better I’d think there’s a MHS revolution on the horizon!
